I lay tangled up in beating organs and wrapped up in your arms, your teeth tugging at the oxygen rushing through the veins in my throat. I want to breathe you in until my lungs expand and you are in my heart. Exhale and let me surround you, because you don’t want to go anymore than I want you to. I’ll wait for you to fall into me with frantic apologies they’ll never come, but it’s worth the wait anyhow- then I’ll think back on the bruises in the contours of my chest and laugh. What was I thinking, being mad at you? I paint myself with words because words are easier to understand than colors, and you said

The storm came before the calm and I am left up-side-down and flirtatious with disaster. I burn my paper secrets, your shirt, and that jacket with my initials inside, and all I am left with is this place that feels more like a hospital than a home. I am left with memories of the freckle on your ear and how much you bled that one afternoon. I turned the light on so you could tell me jokes about your tunnel vision but things got out of hand. Now the ocean is in my bedroom and my feet are in the sand. Sometimes I am just a fool in love, sometimes I am just a fool. I can’t swim in the loudness of your silence anymore.

I wish the news had warned me

My heart has slowed to a stop with a smile frozen on my face because I’m such a mess of a dreamer. I say things like “Your name is just below the surface of every single laugh that tumbles out of my lips.” I’ve cried three times since that day and there is no feeling left in my fingertips, but all of my emotions are intact. Like love and anger. Or something like that. I could think up clever lines but really there’s not that much to say.

You never fetched me the stars when I get lost and I can’t sleep, so I catalogued every comforting gesture you’ve ever sent my way. I told you I wore my heart on my sleeve, you cut them both off and tucked them into your chest pocket “for safe keeping”. Turn me on and get all the miles out of me, until we break down with no one around because damn it, that’s just where you want me. I know that my screaming and shouting won’t keep you faithful, but am I so young and helpless to end up such a stupid girl? I am upside down not knowing what to think with my heart in my head and no answers left to find.

I'm leaving. You can unwatch this, I won't be back on here except for a few times in the next couple of weeks to tie up any loose ends I have left. Would you believe that when I was writing the first version of the poem (which was quite a bit longer), I fell asleep. I woke up to find catch a cab cab cabby caddy written on my page.
